Learning Linear Algebra Through Derive
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall (September, 1995)
Author: Brian Denton
Average review score:

Well organized, concise, to-the point.
"Learning Linear Algebra Through Derive" by Brian Denton

This book is a good example of how all college level math textbooks should be written. It focuses on understanding the concepts of linear algebra by following a basic form of presenting a theorem and then working through the proof combined with exercises focusing on both methods and proofs of properties along with independent exploratory exercises for use with Derive (PC math program). This method of presentation is excellent for understanding the basic fundamentals and developing thinking skills to heighten knowledge of the material. The text covers the following areas of linear algebra:

1. The Idea of a Matrix (basic operations) 2. The Determinant 3. Vectors 4. More Matrices (properties, finding inverse matrices, solving systems of eqs.) 5. Systems of Linear Equations (more solution methods, error checking, perturbations) 6. Vector Spaces and Linear Transformations 7. Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors 8. Orthogonal Matrices 9. Applications

This book would easily get five stars if it did not omit basic proofs in some of the later chapters, saying that they can be found in any traditional linear algebra text. This necessitates the use of a secondary text and hence reduces the completeness of this book. By using this book I have learned the material covered in a semester-long course in greater depth in under a month. I believe this book is a very useful tool for anyone learning linear algebra.

Mail-Order Mother
Published in Hardcover by Harlequin Mills & Boon Ltd (17 July, 1998)
Author: Kate Denton
Average review score:

Overall, the book was a pleasure to read
I thorougly enjoyed "Mail Order Bride," though the premise was contrived. The protagonist, Greg Merrifield's wife, Charlotte died, leaving Greg with twin babies to raise. Before dying, Charlotte made Greg promise to find a mother for the twins. Okay, that's believable. At the urging of his best friend, Elton, Greg ran an ad for a mother and wife. For my money, that was a bit much. But Jane a beautiful model who was fired for being too old (33) responded to the ad. The reader is made to feel the love between Greg and Jane, though Greg won't admit to himself or to Jane that he loves her. What I found incredulous and forced was that a hunk like Greg would advertise for a wife. Why not date, until Miss Right materializes? Once, you get beyond the premise, you'll find "MOB" a complete delight. The dialogue is lively; the pace, brisk. The story will evoke many a smile. The book had only one sex scene, which suited me fine. I'm not a prude. Far from it. But I prefer story and dialogue and character development to sex. But the sentence that preceded the moment of intimacy is so incredibly sensual. It will defnitely make you conjure an image, and if it doesn't give you a little spark, baby, you're dead! For a dash of light-hearted romance, I highly recommend this book.

Man With No Name: Turn Lemons into Lemonade
Published in Paperback by Aslan Pub (April, 1994)
Authors: Wally Amos and Camilla Denton
Average review score:

You must see the invisible to do the impossible
I was honored to hear a talk by this gentle, humorous man 7/15/98 at the INTA Conference in Arizona. He genuinely bubbles with enthusiasm and positive energy. It was a joy to read this book and learn how he turns events around to his satisfaction, depending solely upon God. Two of his powerful statements are, "Failure is Someone Else's Opinion of the Outcome of a Situation," and "Power Is In Being, Not in Doing." Wally Amos depends, he says, on spiritual laws that work - he doesn't have to understand them - they just work. He tells us how to benefit from adversity and of the many relationship problems that occur and how to handle them. I enjoyed every minute reading this book and highly recommend it.

People of the West Desert: Finding Common Ground

Fascinating
I had a hard time putting this book down, although I seldom read non-fiction. The case studies were very interesting, and I felt the book gave a good feel for life in the desert.

Quiltmaking
Published in Paperback by Sterling Publications (November, 1988)
Authors: Susan Denton and Barbara MacEy
Average review score:

Quiltmaking
This is a good quilt design book, rather than a beginner quiltmaking book. It covers the concept of color, piecing, applique pattern, effect of repeating units, and innovative log cabin designs.

What I really like was the presentation of quilts made from some mathematical curve by Susan Denton, and very innovative logcabin quilts by Barbara Macey. It is much more artistic than traditional block pattern quilts, almost like water-color quilt, if not a little fractal-like.

I would highly recommend this book to those who are looking to be more creative than block pattern quilt, and like to add an artistic touch.
